Design

The Design Course is new and will have its first intake of students in October 2024.

Based in the Department of Architecture, students will study a variety of designs and learn how different scales of projects influence people, cultures, economies and the natural world. Focussing on multi-disciplinary design in the built environment, but with additional areas: design of physical objects, apps, artificial intelligence and electronics. Students will generate solutions to real-world problems through core studio projects, learning about: sustainability in design and how the science of sustainability and engineeering can inform design.

Related subjects being studied include: design history, environmental design, mathematics, engineering and natural sciences. Knowledge from these subjects can be applied to design projects.

The course is taught by practising engineers, architects and designers in studio, and academics who are leading research in the fields of sustainability and design, and resilience. Their research covers: work on refugee camps, studying the effect of earthquakes on structures, creating a more inclusive environment, participatory design through our forthcoming urban room and the use of traditional and new sustainable building materials.

Facilities in the department include: workshops, studios, reprographics, digital fabrication lab and computer workstations.
